How Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Could Differentiate Its Tablets And Fuel Sales

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPads have been caught up in the dwindling tablet sales but that could change. A recently awarded patent provides hints about how Apple could differentiate iPads from the tablet crowd and potentially drive sales. The patent describes multiple nibs for a stylus pen, such as the one that Apple created for iPad Pro.

Digital or stylus pen is not a new concept. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is among the hardware makers with a line of devices that support stylus pens. However, Apple’s multi-tip stylus pen could be a game-changer.

What’s Apple dreaming of?

In the patent, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) describes how a digital pen could have multiple nibs that fit different use cases. It is as if the company would add a code that makes it possible for its digital pen users to choose among a range of pencil tips or brush sizes to use.

Unlocking new functionality

A stylus pen with multiple nibs could expand the capability of the digital pen and unlock new functionality in iPads. Perhaps that could also enable Apple to draw more creative people to iPads because they can get unique tools that fit their various use cases.

The other opportunity that could come with a multi-faceted stylus pen could be enhanced collaboration. Think about a case where a workgroup can collaborate on a project and the stylus pen stores all the changes or contributions made by different participants.

Commoditization of tablet market

The tablet market is weighed down by different factors. One of them is that the market has become commoditized. As such, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) could spark interest in its iPads by adding differentiators such as a stylus pen with multiple nibs. The other cause of stress in tablet market is cannibalization of the market by larger display smartphones famously known as phablets. Apple’s iPhone 6 line plays in the phablet market.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) files patents from time to time but not every technology it patents features in a market product. As such, there is no guarantee that the multi-tip stylus pen would see the light of day.
