Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Google is in the process of enhancing its search engine to provide live TV guide. The plan comes at a time when the company says it has noticed a sharp increase in TV show search over the past one year. Google’s live TV listing will build on the service the company rolled out last year that simplifies discovery of places one can watch popular shows and movies.

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) says Google’s TV listing will be broad. For example, while live TV guide will focus on the offerings of traditional TV providers, the company will also provide listing for over-the-top (OTT) video services. That means that alongside live TV shows, users will also be able to search and find apps and websites offering the latest episodes of their favorite shows.

The idea of including OTT listing in the TV guide indicates Google’s acknowledgement of the growing popularity of Internet-based video services. In any case, Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is a provider of OTT through its subscription-based YouTube Red.

TV listing refresh

Google’s live TV and OTT listings are a refresh of its TV guide service. Although the TV guide search has been around for a year or so, it has been largely an inconsistent offering. You have to go through a number of steps to find the show you want to watch. Sometimes the options are limited because certain providers turn up without links that you can click to head directly to where you can watch the show.

As such, Alphabet says its latest TV guide search simplifies the process of finding your favorite movies and also generates more options.

Increase in TV show search

OTT video services enable people to watch TV anywhere and anytime. Perhaps that explains the spike in TV show searches coming to Google. According to Google, it has noticed 55% spike in TV show searches over the past one year. The company now sees that as an opportunity to improve the search experience for its users by making it easy for them to discover the shows they want.
