International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) And University Of Illinois To Expand The Capabilities Of Watson Technology
Get ready for a more capable Watson technology. That appears to be the message International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) is sending out as it partners with University of Illinois to research and build cognitive computing systems based on Watson. The company and the institution will open a Watson-themed cognitive computing systems research center at the University of Illinois Urbana campus.
Professor Wen-Mei Hwu of University of Illinois’ Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Illinois will lead the research work. IBM scientists as well as the university’s graduate students will be part of the research team.
What is the research about?
The research center is set to open in summer. The main goal of the research will be to optimize Watson’s cognitive computing capabilities with the hope of coming up with a more superior cognitive computing system to what is presently available.
At the research center, Watson systems will be fed massive academic data in the form of videos, textbooks, lecture notes and homework. After feeding Watson with curriculum dataset, the researchers will put the system to attempting a college-level exam.
Going about the research
According to International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) the research collaboration with the University of Illinois will be based on its OpenPOWER platform. As such, the cognitive algorithms and hardware designs developed through the collaboration will be made available to the open source community.
Expanding Watson’s scope
That would be another step in extending the boundaries of Watson cognitive computing technology. International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM)’s dream is to train Watson in a full range of disciplines so that it can help with solving some of the most complex challenges the world faces today and will face in the future.
International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) has created several divisions of Watson, including Watson Health and Watson IoT. As more devices connect to the Internet, massive amounts of data will be generated and IBM is trying to leverage Watson to help in making sense of that data through IBM Watson IoT unit.
