Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Pokes Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB)’s Instant Articles As Apple News Opens To All
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is lifting the barriers that have kept some publishers out of its mobile news delivery platform called Apple News. In the latest development, the company has said Apple News will be widely available for every publisher – big or small. That means that individual bloggers will now be able to post on Apple News.
But the development is sure to upset Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB). The rollout of Apple News itself seemed like a counter to Facebook’s own Instant Articles. Now Apple News is threatening to sprint faster than Instant Articles in drawing publishers to its platform.
In the news delivery market, both Apple News and Instant Articles seek the attention of publishers. The services initially focused on drawing in high-profile publishers such as the New York Times, The Washington Post and The Guardian among others. That is where Facebook’s Instant Articles has stuck.
Apple New rolling on at speed
However, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has made a smart move with its Apple News that could make it more appealing to publishers frustrated elsewhere.
Not only is Apple working to allow every kind of publisher to post on Apple News, but the company is also promising to provide publishers with a host of related solutions such as metrics on readership and interaction. Additionally, publishers on Apple News will be able to benefit from Apple’s iAd system to set up advertisements.
The rollout of Apple News to all publishers follows hot on the heels of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s move to help publishers on the platform deal with ad-blockers. Many publishers have recently lamented over the rise of apps that enable readers to sidestep ads, thus denying them revenue. In Apple’s case, publishers can overcome the frustration by masking ads within the text. However, the ads will have to be appropriately labeled as “sponsored.”
What next for Facebook?
It will be interesting to see how Facebook responds to Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s challenge in digital news delivery.
