The venture arms of Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) together with a host of other investors have helped raise $30 million for Skyport, a security startup. Skyport, a startup currently led by a former HP Inc (NYSE:HPQ) executive, Art Gilliland, focuses on what has come to be known as microsegmentation security.

Following the latest funding round in which Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Cisco participated, Skyport’s total fundraising so far amounts to $67 million.

Alphabet’s Google Ventures led the latest Series C funding round. Besides Cisco’s Cisco Investments, other investors in Skyport’slatest funding round included Northgate Capital, InstantScale and Thomvest Ventures.

Skyport’s existing investors such as Sutter Hill Ventures, Index Ventures and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC)’s Intel Capital also participated in the latest fundraiser for Skyport.

What’s Skyport’s business?

Skyport is a vendor of micro segmentation security solutions. These are security measures built into the network system. They are in the form of a specialized connection card that controls how the parts or nodes of a computer interact.

According to Skyport’s CEO, Gilliland, who left HPQ to lead the startup, their security solutions are the kind that ensure every application in a computer or network gets its own security envelope. With that, they systems that Skyport offers are capable of filtering all in-bound communications and interactions to enhance system security.

Usually, Skyport’s security cards help to block any interaction that isn’t allowed.

Skyport was founded by former Juniper Networks, Inc. (NYSE:JNPR) and Cisco engineers Will Eatherton, Michael Beesley and Rob Rodgers. Gilliland joined them following HP’s breakup to help guide the startup to the next phase of growth.

Competitors

In Skyport, Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Cisco are investing in a competitor of vMware, Inc. (NYSE:VMW). Other startups offering similar security features as Skyport include Illumio and vArmour.

It is currently unclear exactly how much Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) invested in Skyport.
