Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s YouTube Gaming Gets A Facelift
Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has added new features to its game dedicated video channel YouTube Gaming. The company has also rolled out the service to more markets. But the development could also mean pressure for Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s Twitch, which rivals YouTube Gaming.
Most of the feature additions Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has announced for YouTube gaming are geared towards enhancing mobile experience. They include improvement in browsing as well as viewing experiences in the app.
Live streams to become more popular
With the latest upgrades for YouTube Gaming, Alphabet is hoping to make live streaming of games more popular on the platform. Late last year, the company launched a feature called Mobile Capture, which allows gamers to stream games directly from their mobile handsets. The latest changes also inspire more live streaming on YouTube Gaming.
As part of the efforts to encourage live streaming, Alphabet has now made it possible for live stream players to adjust the quality of the streams they are playing. For example, it is now possible to switch between DVR mode and 60fps playback on Android. These tweaks were only previously available for HTML5 desktop and iOS players.
Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has also simplified the homepage of YouTube Gaming, mainly doing away with distractions such as sidebars. Instead, the company has added pages that simplifies browsing and management of games and channels.
Additionally, Alphabet has also now made it possible for YouTube Gaming players on Android to multitask in the sense that they can watch and play at the same time.
Rollout to new markets
Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is expanding geographical availability of YouTube Gaming. Outside the U.S., the service will now be available in Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. According to the company, these markets are home to some of the top gaming producers.
Alphabet plans to roll out YouTube Gaming to more international markets.
Getting better than the rival?
Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s YouTube Gaming and Amazon’s Twitch compete for the attention of gamers and gaming creators. It will be interesting to see how Amazon reacts to the latest updates on the rival platform.
