Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) has been voted the best carrier in terms of overall performance according to a report from RootMetrics.

The independent testing company ranked Verizon as the best network performer for the second half of the past year. The company managed to beat its rivals such as AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), which has been closing the gap quickly. AT&T’s customer care was voted the best in the industry. However, Verizon managed to retain the win for the fifth consecutive time in the overall network performance category.

RootMetrics carried out the test across the country. The test involved numerous areas including the network, texts, calls, speeds, reliability and the overall performance. Verizon came in first in five of the categories and had a tie in the text category. The company also garnered 272 of the State RootScore awards out of the 300 awards provided by the testing firm. Verizon on 253 awards last year meaning there were some improvements that have resulted in the extra awards this year.

The mobile company’s VP of network support, Mike Haberman stated that the firm was happy to achieve the fifth consecutive win in the RootMetrics ranking. He also added that the firm is already working towards a sixth win because the customers count on the firm to be better. Although Verizon was ranked overall best, RootMetrics acknowledged that the other three carriers have also stepped up their game in different categories.

AT&T improved its share of awards by a larger percentage compared to its rivals. Sprint also performed better in the text and call categories in various states. T-Mobile US Inc (NASDAQ:TMUS) also received nine awards for the second half of the year thus a great improvement from no awards earned in the first half.

RootMetrics carried out the tests over 232,000 miles across all the 50 states including 6,607 indoor locations. The analysis firm used Samsung Galaxy S5 devices to come up with the results. The tests for all the carriers were done simultaneously.
