Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Amazon (AMZN) And Alphabet (GOOG) Seeking To Stream NFL Games
It is emerging that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s Google are interested in owning a portion of NFL games rights. The companies want to stream the content of the popular game and they are particularly eying the more popular Thursday Night Football. The obvious conclusion is that Apple is keen to launch its rumored Apple TV service with a bang and Amazon is working towards making its Prime video service more interesting. Then there is Google apparently plotting to raise the profile of its paid-subscription YouTube Red with NFL streaming.
None of the companies are openly discussing their interest in NFL rights, but that appears to be more a case of trying to play the cards closer to the vest than denial of interest. Various media reports, including from Reuters, have cited that at least Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google are in discussion with NFL to stream certain games. As for the case of Apple and Google, the two giants are reportedly interested in streaming three NFL games for next season to be played in London. Amazon appears to have also thrown its hat in the ring.
Presently, CBS and NBC hold the rights to broadcast Thursday Night Football games for the next two years. The two media houses also have the rights to stream the games to their cable subscribers. While that means that streaming NFL games isn’t entirely a new concept, the coming of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and others should expand online access to the games. In any case, CBS and NBC are more interested in streaming the games to their paying cable customers, but Apple, Google and Amazon will expand access to the games for cord-cutters.
Engaging multiple streamers?
It seems likely that the rights to stream NFL games will be split among multiple companies, which should mean that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Google and Amazon could all be accommodated in their quest to own rights to make NFL games available online.
