Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) typically studies global mobile data trends and projects what the world can expect in the coming years. In the latest case, the company has released its 2020 mobile data predictions. Among other things, Cisco says that monthly global mobile data traffic will reach 30.6 exabytes in 2020, significantly up from 3.7 exabytes in 2015.

Mobile video and the Internet of Things are expected to drive the anticipated sharp spike in mobile data traffic over the next five years. Global penetration of smartphones is also expected to leap up significantly between 2015 and 2020, supported by the availability of cheaper handsets.

5.5 billion mobile users

Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO)’s analysis has revealed that there will be 5.5 billion mobile handsets in use by 2020, which represents about 70% of the global population. Moreover, Cisco says that by 2020, more people in the world will have mobile phones compared to those who have cars, tap water and electricity. Mobile phones have become an important part of life in many places in the world. Perhaps that explains why people are prioritizing the purchase of mobile handsets over running water and power connection.

Mobile data traffic

Cisco sees global mobile data traffic hitting 30.6 exabytes per month and 366.8 exabytes annually by 2020. The mobile data trend in 2015 was 3.7 exabytes per month and 44.2 exabytes on annualized basis.

The rise of Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi networks are expected to handle much of the mobile data traffic in the coming years. Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) predicts that 55% of mobile data traffic will travel through Wi-Fi networks by 2020. It is also expected that the number of Wi-Fi hotspots will increase to 432 million globally by 2020 from just about 64 million in 2015.

Wearables

The Internet of Things is also expected to play a major role in increasing mobile data traffic over the next few years. According to Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), there will be 600 million smart wearables in use by 2020, sharply up from 97 million in 2015.

Mobile video

As mobile networks improve in quality and coverage, mobile video streaming is predicted to rise, thus adding to the increase in mobile data traffic.
