The Agenda Of Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE)’s MWC Could Be Mobile

Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) can be seen trying to whet appetite for its Mobile World Congress 2016 presentation. The company is already sending out invitations, but it is not revealing the plans it has for the event. However, given Sony’s recent smartphone refresh, it is almost certain that it would reserve its MWC presentation for wearables and tablets.

Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) intends to hold a press event early on February 22 at the MWC in Barcelona. As much as Sony is trying to play its MWC cards closer to the chest, it is not impossible to speculate the areas the company might want to address. Wearable tech is one area that could feature prominently in Sony’s MWC presentation. Its SmartWatch 3 requires a refresh from body design to apps. In any case, with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) in the smartwatch space with its Apple Watch, Sony needs to catch up with the rival in a number of areas. Perhaps a SmartWatch 4 could be in Sony’s cards for unveiling at the MWC.

Smartwatches and fitness trackers are becoming increasingly important gadgets in the lives of consumers. They enable users to catch up with updates anywhere and anytime without having to reach out for their smartphones. Other wearable providers like Apple have also started to implement payment capabilities in their wearables. By refreshing its smartwatch catalog, Sony not only stands to fend off competition, but also makes its products more useful to consumers.

It also seems likely that Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) will use the MWC event to talk about its tablet plans. For example, its existing Xperia Z4 line of tablets is aging. That explains why Sony might want to use MWC to unveil Xperia Z5 or other later versions of its tablets.

Given that Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) only recently refreshed its line of smartphones with the release of the Xperia Z5 family, it looks remote that smartphones will feature prominently in its MWC presentation next month. However, because the company isn’t discussing its MWC plans presently, perhaps it has some surprises even on the smartphone side.
