Cisco Systems’ ACI Update Extends Greater Support To VMware, Microsoft Platform Virtualization

Threatened by software defined networks (SDN) movement, Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) is fighting back. The company has figured out how to make its networking hardware more efficient and secure. As such, Cisco is rolling out an update for its Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) platform as part of the answer to SDN disruption. Cisco says the update will support containerization and virtualization on platforms such as those provided by Docker, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and VMware, Inc. (NYSE:VMW).

It appeared like SDN was going to completely displace Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) in the networking equation. Now Cisco is saying not so fast.

The company is finding new ways to make its networking hardware relevant in a rapidly evolving market. In the latest case, the company says it has come up with a solution that strengthens system virtualization and containerization where its networking gears are used.

Targeted gears

With an update on its ACI software, Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) has made it possible for the Nexus 9000 switches to support virtualization on system platforms backed by Microsoft and VMware. Additionally, the update also introduces support for Docker, a containerization provider.

According to Cisco, over 5,000 customers using its Nexus 9000 gears are ready for ACI. Through ACI, Cisco is finding ways to modernize its legacy networking equipment and sidestep disruptions of SDN.

What’s new?

Among other things, the latest ACI update introduces Docker containers as well deployment and policy tools through Cisco’s Application Policy Infrastructure Controller.

Additionally, Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) says the update will introduce support for cloud automation such as OpenStack and VMware vRealize Automation.

Moreover, the ACI update will bring virtualization to platforms such as Hyper-V and VMware VDS from Microsoft and VMware, respectively.

Cisco will roll out the ACI updates starting this quarter.

Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO)’s ACI is enterprise-facing software that targeted big data and service providers.
