Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) Outlines AI Research Advancements

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) has outlined some of its recent research advancements in the area of artificial intelligence (AI). Among other things, the company has been able to figure out how to speed up the machine learning process. The progress highlighted by Facebook appears to bring widespread adoption and application of machine learning technology closer to reality. Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) are the other technology companies active on the machine learning front.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) has hit multiple breakthroughs in its AI research efforts. The company has been able to train computers to learn at a rate that is 10 times faster than the normal machine learning process. Additionally, the company has made significant advances in training computers to better recognize objects, especially photos, plan and deliver more accurate predictions.

Speedy learning process

Teaching computers to learn new things typically takes a long time – months in most cases. With Facebook reporting that it has been able to get computers to learn at 10 times less time than they usually do, the advancement is of significant importance in the machine learning realm and could lift multiple hurdles in enterprise deployment of AI technologies.

Accurate prediction

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) also said its AI research team, fondly referred to as FAIR, managed to get computers to predict events more accurately, hitting an accuracy rate of 90%. Correct prediction is one of the major challenges in machine learning and the capability can be leveraged to solve problems in many areas such as prediction of economic data or weather conditions.

Unaided machine predictions

Not only has Facebook been able to get machines to deliver more accurate predictions, but also to do so independently, without human supervision as is normally the case.

The advances made by Facebook in AI contribute to efforts being made at Alphabet and IBM to unlock the potential in machine learning. In the case of IBM, the company has a highly intelligent cognitive computing technology called Watson, which it has sought to leverage in almost every industry including Finance, Health and Education.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB)’s AI advancements could find their way to virtual reality, a promising computing platform in the coming years.
