A CDMA Version of BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s Priv May be Available Later
BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) may at a later date make available a version of the Priv smartphone that supports CDMA systems, thus making it possible to use the phone on Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) network. Currently, BlackBerry is only offering GSM-based Priv supported by AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T). The unlocked models of the BlackBerry Priv are available at about $700 in the U.S.
Initially, BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) will only sell GSM-compatible Priv smartphones with AT&T being the first U.S. carrier to back the phone on arrival. However, later on, BlackBerry intends to make available CDMA versions of Priv, according to various hints including the one that shows Priv on trial on Verizon network.
Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ), and Sprint Corp (NYSE:S) use CDMA-based systems. As such, a CDMA version of Priv should later have carrier support beyond AT&T in the U.S. However, only GSM-based Priv are available on preorders with preorders already opened in the U.S., Canada and the U.K.
Priv on AT&T network
Through AT&T, you can get your hands on the Priv smartphone at $249 tied to a two-year contract. You can also acquire Priv with zero deposit through AT&T Next and pay $24.67 monthly for 30 months under the Next 24. The other installment option is Next 18 that calls for monthly payment of $30.84 over 24 months. You can also choose Next 12 to pay $37 per month for 20 months. As such, purchasing Priv on contract will set you back $740.
BlackBerry shops in the U.S. are offering Priv at $700 upfront.
Designed to be different
Priv is BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s first foray into Android base. The phone is deliberately designed to stand out from the rest of the Android devices. Priv features both virtual and physical keyboards with the button keyboard being revealed by sliding the display upward.
The BlackBerry Priv is powered by Qualcomm, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM)’s Snapdragon 808 processor, which is backed by 3GB of RAM. The 5.4-inch display smartphone features 2,560 x 1,440 pixels in resolution and ships with base storage of 32GB, which can be expanded through MicroSD card to 2TB.
Priv boasts 18-MP back camera and a 2-MP front shooter.
