Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Acquires Digisfera To Boost Its Street View Business
Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is the new owner of the Portuguese imagery startup Digisfera. The acquisition of Digisfera is aimed at bolstering the Google Street View project. Alphabet didn’t disclose how much it paid to get hold of Digisfera.
Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is looking for new ways to get the best out of its Street View project. With the acquisition of Digisfera, it becomes clear that, in addition to internal innovation, Alphabet is also keen to acquire talents and technologies to bolster Street View.
For the four years that it has been around, Digisfera has been mainly focused on imagery, design and creation of services for 360-degree imaging. Some of the projects that the startup has previously undertaken include a large zoomable image of President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2013. Digisfera’s other work includes a 360-degree image of the Maracanã Stadium (Rio de Janeiro) during the Brazil 2014 World Cup event.
Digisfera top open-source Marzipano
Following its acquisition by Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Digisfera will discontinue some of its services and open-source others. For example, the startup will end its imaging tagging service called PanoTag but will open-source its 360-degree image processing and exporting service called Marzipano. According to Digisfera, opening sourcing Marzipano is aimed at benefiting the photography community.
How much can Digisfera transform Street View?
The Digisfera team will join Alphabet’s Street View team as part of the acquisition to work on 360-degree photography, among other projects. It will be interesting to see how Google Street View transforms with the acquisition of Digisfera.
Street View getting enriched
It was in 2007 that Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) first published its Street View images that render 360-degree viewing of various places. Alphabet’s Street View crew has gone places to show the world rare images. With Street View being enriched through the acquisition of Digisfera, you can expect more awesome imagery from Street View.
Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) has not disclosed how much in spent on the acquisition of Digisfera.
