Ford Motor Company(NYSE:F) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV(NYSE:FCAU)’s Jeep Beat Out Toyota Motor Corp (ADR) (TM), Volkswagen AG (ADR) (VLKAY) And General Motors Company (GM)?
It is quite well-known that Toyota Motor Corp (ADR) (NYSE:TM), Volkswagen AG (ADR) (OTCMKTS:VLKAY), and General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) were the top-ranked vehicle makers in 2014. This was because they sold 10.23 million, 10.14 million, and 9.92 million units respectively. However, an interesting article from TopSpeed shows that Google search data reveals some different answers as to the most popular brands in different regions.
Search Trends Report
According to the Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s annual trends report, the most-searched brand was Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F), followed by Jeep and Dodge in the second and third place respectively. Strangely, Toyota Motor Corp (ADR) (NYSE:TM) was the fourth popular brand in the world. Volkswagen AG (ADR) (OTCMKTS:VLKAY) did not find a place in the top ten at all. As far as General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) is concerned, it was ranked fifth overall, though it did not find a place among the top five in the United States.
The reason for this big difference is that selling millions of cars alone does not make a brand the most popular. What people find interesting and search out is often very different then what they buy. It just means that such automakers meet the requirements of more numbers of customers. Also, more than the types of cars, it also reflected the availability, as well as the affordability. That is why automakers sell more econoboxes, apart from focusing on the emerging markets like South America and Asia-Pacific. The research was based on Google searches during the 12-month period from April last year to March of the current year.
North America Results
Toyota Motor Corp (ADR) (NYSE:TM) was the most popular brand in this region with both Canadian and United States users searching out the brand above Dodge, Jeep, and Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F). That coincides well with the largest-selling brand in North America. The search results also suggest that trends change very frequently.
As far as Mexico, Nissan Motor Co Ltd (ADR) (OTCMKTS:NSANY), as well as Chevrolet from General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) were the big hit. In the United States, Toyota was the clear winner though it was leading in 24 States only.
German automakers dominated in 27 of the 46 nations. BMW was the most searched brand in ten nations whereas Mercedes, as well as Audi, were the most famous in four and two nations respectively. In seven markets, Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen AG (ADR) (OTCMKTS:VLKAY) shared the top honors either among themselves or with other counterparts in the region.
As far as the Asian region, Honda and Toyota Motor Corp (ADR) (NYSE:TM) led the charts. Toyota was the most searched brand in eleven nations. As far as China is concerned, Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) was the most searched brand, though it was surprising. In Australia and New Zealand, Toyota is the winner.
