Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) Releases 2TB Game Drive To Woo Gamers

Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) is looking to take a piece of the gaming pie by providing gamers with a new 2TB external hard drive designed for the Xbox One and Xbox 360.

The company launched the storage drive in line with the shifting digital trend. Most gamers now opt for digital copies of their favorite games rather than purchasing the disc versions. The trend is mostly influenced by the demanding size of the latest games. Some blockbuster franchises such Grand Theft Auto V requires a hefty 42.44 GB, not forgetting other titles that demand even more space. Some of these factors trickle down to costs and thus lead to hefty disc prices.

While hard drives are a better alternative, avid gamers tend to fill up their drives quickly. Having a 500GB external drive does not seem to be enough for them. Seagate has identified the need for hard drives with higher capacity to supplement the limited internal drives especially with the Xbox One, whose internal drive is non-replaceable. Although Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) recently upgraded the Xbox one’s internal hard drive from 500GB to 1TB, most gamers already have the earlier version. Buying a new console does not seem practical, and that’s why Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) decided to resolve the conundrum.

Strategy is the key driver of the success of the new storage drive from Seagate. Microsoft announced backward compatibility for the Xbox One during the 2015 E3 conference. More than 100 titles are already available which means gamers will be looking to accumulate most of these games especially their digital copies. Not forgetting the latest titles that will be released before the year ends. An external storage with ample capacity is, therefore, desirable.

The storage drive is exclusively designed for both Xbox One and the Xbox 360. It simply connects through a USB 3.0 port. It comes with a green cover to evoke the color of the Xbox. Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) has included all the factors that are preferred in an external drive, namely design and portability. Therefore, it can easily be pocketed and does not require an external power source.
