BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB)’s CEO, John Chen, has provided a firm answer of ‘yes’ when asked about whether the company would be interested in making an Android smartphone. That is subject to the security of the device. The answer was in response to speculation in the media in the last one month or so. There was no mention about this during the earnings conference call. However, it was during an interview with CNBC, the CEO was asked about making of Android smartphones.

Surprising Answer

There is no doubt that BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s CEO answer came in as a surprise for some investors, as well as, the analysts. That was mainly because the company has been maintaining that it is shifting its focus towards software, and the company is also investing in it to realize the value.

The company’s CEO said that the company’s BlackBerry is the most secured phone. Therefore, if Android too provides such a security, then the smartphone inventor will not mind in building it. That means that the Canadian firm is not losing interest in the hardware business altogether. It appears that BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) wants to keep several options open for turning back into a growth path.

New Positioning

The remark during the interview means a fresh beginning for positioning the brand, BlackBerry. That might also translate into launching an Android-powered smartphone for the first time. Reports indicate that the company is already in the process of working on an Android phone without having to drop BlackBerry 10 support.

The comments from BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s CEO indicate that in whatever maneuver the company decides Security will be a premium concern. Chen has kept Security a prime concern in everything they do and it could add its expertise in the area to Android devices.  The move shows that the company is willing to try anything to restore growth to the smartphone segment.
