Apple Inc. (AAPL) Gets Patent For A Viral Advertising Management System And It’s Awesome
Could Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) thwart Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB)’s dominance of the advertising business? That is a question bombarding the minds of many analysts on Apple being granted a patent for a viral advertising system. According to patent filings, the technology can track ads or media content shared on various platforms such as emails, texts, and social networks.
Potential Uses Of the new patent
It is still unclear what Apple intends to do with the new technology. It will be interesting to see if Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will end up launching a viral advertising product even though its core business revolves around hardware and apps.
The company has already launched an ad blocker feature that allows iPhone and iPad users to block ads from web publishers. The feature affirms sentiments that the company may not be planning to enter the ads business. The company has always pursued patents for technologies it does not want its competitors to gain access to.
The patented viral ad tracking method could find its way into iAd advertising system for collecting data of people sharing ads with other devices. The company has already expanded the advertising system to more countries as it moves to enhance programmatic ad buying in the system. However, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is not planning to start tracking user’s consumption of the social media.
Apple Diversification Strategy
Tim Cook has been at loggerheads with Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Facebook over their persistence tracking of users across multiple devices and multiple media. The fact that the viral advertising system does almost the same raises further questions about Apple’s plans for the new system.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has in the recent past been diversifying its operations, and the filling of the ads tracking system does not come as a surprise. There is already talk that it may be planning to launch an autonomous car as part of an expansion strategy away from the core business. The latest developments just show the company’s willingness to expand to other areas of growth.
