BlackBerry Ltd (BBRY) Gets mixed response From Analysts For Android On Its Phone
After getting mixed response from analyst community BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) may consider coming up with a slider smartphone that runs on an Android operating software according to reports. The Canadian company has received a beating on the hardware front, having seen its market share in the business slashed to a mere 1%.
BlackBerry Software Play
Coming up with an Android phone would only make sense if BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) is looking to become more of a security-focused company on the software and service front. Such a move will be an attempt to make the company’s security solutions accessible to millions of devices around the globe. Presenting a perfect opportunity for the company to grow on the service and software front according to J. Gold Associates analyst, Jack Gold
Margins in the smartphone business would thwart any prospects of the company becoming profitable on the hardware front according to the analyst. “There is no real advantage for them to do so; phones are a low margin business,” said the analyst
Kantar Worldpanel chief of research Carolina Milanesi shares a different opinion. He believes it could be a blessing in disguise for BlackBerry to tap into Android ecosystem having failed to make its OS popular. Going with Android would make BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) more appealing on the enterprise side of business thanks to its renowned security solutions.
Milanesi does not believe that the company needs to continue being a hardware play as it can strongly leverage its strengths on the software front without developing any phones.
Need For Alliances
Tapping into the Android ecosystem is something BlackBerry should have done a long time ago according to Moor Insights & Strategy analyst Patrick Moorhead. The analyst does not believe the company has any chance of competing with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL). Instead, the company should think of forming alliances like that of an Android phone
IDC analyst, Ramon Llamas, is remaining skeptical on BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) succeeding on the Multi-OS battle with the Android phone battle. It is only Samsung that has succeeded on this front on producing both Android and Windows smartphones. BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) on its part is remaining numb, affirming its commitment to BlackBerry 10 OS.
