Trying for voice recognition
At a event in San Francisco Brendan Iribe, the CEO of Oculus VR, showcased virtual reality goggles to executives of Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB). The company executives were more than impressed with the gadgets that were showcased. The device is designed to be connected to high end gaming computer. But Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) believes that in the future this device may also feature microphones to facilitate communication. The company is exploring the possibility of deploying voice recognition software in the device that will enable it to recognize user commands. The addition of high speed wireless data transfers is also a possibility.
Michael Schroepfer, the chief technical officer of Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), considers Oculus Rift as a teleportation device that can take the user into the world of virtual reality. The company acquired Oculus VR last year for $2 billion. The latest device will not be available for commercial use until next year. However, the presentation at this stage has shown promise for a new kind of communication device.
Facebook trying for safe route
The virtual reality is one realm where many companies have attempted to make an entry but have failed in the past. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is taking a safe route of launching the product in stages. In first stage, the VR goggles will be available for gaming on high end computer. It also showcased a few games that will be available on Oculus Rift at the San Francisco event. The company will make an entry in the gaming industry before introducing the first of its kind communication device.
