Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO)’s Sets Eyes On Piston Cloud Computing To Boost Its Intercloud Portfolio

Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) is bringing Piston Cloud Computing under its rapidly expanding cloud computing umbrella. Piston is a distributor of OpenStack cloud and will enable Cisco to do more in the cloud space, such as broadening its distributed and automated systems. Cisco said Piston will join its Intercloud division.

For Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), tapping Piston makes plenty of sense to the company’s cloud campaigns. In broader terms, Piston is another feather to the cap of Cisco’s Intercloud, as Cisco’s head of business development, Hilton Romanski, tried to articulate in a blog post.

Intercloud driving the cloud vision at Cisco

Cisco launched Intercloud in 2014 as part of its efforts to build a connected network of clouds. Intercloud captures functions that include migrating workloads in public clouds and automatically provisioning resources according to workload demands.

According to Romanski, Intercloud exists as delivery cloud just the way Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO)’s customers want to have it. That implies secure and efficient cloud connection everywhere while also ensuring higher compliance and control standards.

Contribution of Piston

With Piston, an OpenStack cloud distributor, Intercloud is set to acquire more muscle in crucial areas like cloud distribution and automation. Piston will also enable Cisco to add another layer of infrastructure to its private cloud.

No financial disclosure

Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) did not disclose how much it paid to acquire Piston. The company also failed to mention how many members of Piston will be able to transition in the new acquisition.

Betting on cloud for redemption

Towards expanding its cloud networks offering, Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) has, in recent times, let its wallet loose to tap potentially key assets in the space. The company boosted its Intercloud campaign early last month with the purchase of Tropo, provider of  a cloud programming interface.

Cloud presents an opportunity for Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) to redeem itself as it faces pressure in the legacy networking hardware business. Focus on secure cloud network presents the company with significant growth opportunity given the rapid rate of enterprise cloud deployment.
