Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (KRX:005930)(OTCMKTS:SSNLF) is working on a newer version of Note smartphone to be unveiled sometime in July as opposed to the traditional August/September timeframe that the company has previously observed. The reason for the early release of the larger Galaxy Note 5 is aimed at spoiling the party for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) in the phablet market. Samsung is also expected to supplement its phablet campaign with a curved-surface Galaxy Note 5.

There is no way Samsung is going to wait for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) to continue giving it trouble in the premium smartphone market. Since Apple launched the larger-display iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung’s fortunes at the top have been shrinking. What Samsung plans to do to teach Apple some lessons in the phablet market is bring the launch of Note 5 closer than usual.

Race to market

Reports from Korea have cited that Samsung could introduce the Note 5 sometime in July. Rumors have indicated Apple is expected to release a device which could be a “iPhone S6 Plus” in September. There are further reports that Samsung could get a prototype of Note 5 ready by June to start show offs of the product to its carriers ahead of the official release.

As things stand right known, not much is known about what Samsung will include in Note 5. Currently, Samsung relies on the Note 4 to keep Apple’s iPhone in check, but it hasn’t been able to achieve much on that front, which explains the haste to bring Note 5 to market ahead of Apple’s next release.

Samsung is also working on a curved version of the Note smartphone to replace Galaxy Note Edge.

Mobile payment

Samsung is not only trying to take on Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) on the handset front, but also on the mobile payment market. Alongside the release of Note 5, Samsung is also expected to introduce its version of mobile payment known as Samsung Pay. Like Apple Pay, which is currently available on iPhone 6 series, Samsung Pay has built-in NFC functionality.
