Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) To Release Satirical Comedy Starring Ricky Gervais
Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) announced that it is teaming up with Ricky Gervais for a new comedy special. The streaming giant has picked up a satirical movie by Ricky Gervais, which tells the story of a prominent radio personality that resorts to faking stories.
Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX)’s new film, titled Special Correspondents, will feature Gervais, starring alongside Eric Bana. Should everything turn out as planned, the film is to make its debut next year, according to an official confirmation from the company. Netflix’s new project is written and directed by Gervais himself and will be a remake of the 2009 Frederic Auburtin film.
Special Correspondents is to be co-produced by Unanimous Entertainment and Bron Studios. The film is a classic Ricky Gervais title that embodies smart social satire with heart, according to a statement from Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandon. The executive affirms that it is the kind of grown-up comedy that you won’t get in studios anymore.
Netflix announced its new production last year at the American Film Market where, a month later, Sony Pictures acquired overseas distribution rights in several countries. Special Correspondents is the latest project from Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) and the office creator. The giant streaming company is not new to content creation. Two seasons of Derek were the first satirical production to be released, having already been added as a special show.
Gervais believes Netflix is about to shake up Hollywood, just as it did on the streaming business. Content creation is slowly becoming a key operation for streaming business, as one of the ways of countering having to pay top dollar for content from programmers. Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) has its eye on original content creation as the company moves to become a bit of a competitor with the same networks that it currently sources content from.
