Major Update For Android 5.1 From Google Inc (GOOGL)
Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) disclosed that it has launched a major update to its Android 5.0 Lollipop. The search engine giant indicated that its fresh Android 5.1 version would now support devices like Motorola’s Nexus 6, as well as, HTC’s Nexus 9. The company indicated that the update would enhance the stability, as well as, performance besides offering few fresh features. The features included device protection, high definition voice on compatible phones and support for multiple SIM cards.
Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Lollipop was touted as a visual overhaul for its Android though it had some bugs and random glitches. In the current update of Android 5.1 version, there was some hope that it would remove the bugs and the occasional sluggish performance that the users of Nexus 6 have to undergo. It was blamed on the company’s move to encrypt the storage of the device out of the box.
For Android One markets, support for multiple SIM cards was a key factor and the search engine company confirmed that the update would allow HD voice on T-Mobile US Inc (NYSE:TMUS) and Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) for the Nexus 6. Verizon is yet to release the phone officially.
Taking cue from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s activation lock, Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) has also debuted their own version of protection for the device. The move is also termed as an answer to the smartphone maker’s activation lock move. This is more or less the same anti-theft idea that was applied to Android.
The objective was to protect stolen or lost device with the device protection till the user signs in with Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) account irrespective of someone trying to reset the user’s device to factory settings. The search engine company disclosed that its device protection would be available for most of its Android tablets, as well as, phone that would be shipping with Android’s 5.1 versions.
