BlackBerry Ltd (BBRY) QNX Announces New Hypervisor

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s subsidiary known as QNX Software Systems Limited, this week announced an improved hypervisor. The new, improved, embedded system is known as QNX Hypervisor 1.0, and will be available on the mass market later this year. The introduction of QNX Hypervisor marks another effort by QNX Software Systems to enable developers to do more and achieve greater success in their projects.

QNX Hypervisor allows developers to consolidate several operating systems onto a single computing system. By consolidating multiple OS’s that way, manufacturers are able to enjoy various benefits that range from reduced costs to faster time-to-market. The technology is expected to allow developers to focus on their product differential efforts. As for the end-consumers, they will able to have computing devices with much smaller size, light weight and low power consumption.

Available OS support

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s subsidiary further disclosed that the QNX Hypervisor is designed to support multiple operating systems such as QNX Neutrino OS, Android and Linux. The Hypervisor also comes with various quality standard certifications such as ISO 26262 for automotive safety, IEC 62304 for medical device software and IEC 61508 for industrial safety.

The QNX Hypervisor embedded system is also touted as being capable of delivering faster performance and is also predictable. That makes it suitable for mission-critical applications. There is also the benefit of real-time support.

The new embedded system from QNX Software Systems can be applied effectively in various industries such as automotive, industrial and medical. QNX Hypervisor will be available in the mass market in the 3rd quarter of 2015, but first a selected group of users will try it out starting April this year.

QNX Software Systems has planned a virtualization webinar to demonstrate to manufacturers the benefits, or possible drawbacks, of using hypervisor. Manufacturers will be able to learn how to keep their production costs low without compromising on the quality by using off-the-shelf software.

BlackBerry turnaround efforts

The announcement of QNX Hypervisor comes when BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) has been trying hard to focus more on enterprise software and services to turn around its fortunes. The company has lost ground in the smartphone market but hopes that developing proprietary software will support its growth.
