Track Your Glucose Levels with Apple Inc. Watch
Although Apple Watch is slated for release in April, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has already obtained FDA approval to bundle an app that allows for blood glucose level monitoring with the device when it ships. The app is designed to allow diabetics to quickly and easily read their blood sugar levels by glancing at their wearable device and then share the same with their physician or caregiver.
Wearers of Apple Watch will be able to see their blood glucose level displayed in the form of a graph. DexCom is the developer of the glucose-monitoring software that will be installed.
Two critical functions of the app
The app will support two critical functions related to blood sugar monitoring. First, it will allow diabetics to easily view their sugar levels on their wearable device. The other function in that the app will allow sharing of the collected glucose level data with another person, especially a doctor, for quick intervention.
DexCom’s glucose monitoring app is designed exclusively for Apple Watch, which means that it will not be available on rival smartwatches.
Apple is expected to offer Apple Watch both as a smartwatch that provides extended iPhone functions and a health and fitness device. Continuous tracking of blood sugar levels is critical for diabetics because they risk running into serious medical problems such as stroke and kidney diseases in case of big fluctuations in blood glucose levels.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is set to launch Apple Watch at a time when FDA has relaxed regulation around health-related software. Previously, the agency classified health software under the strictly regulated Class III, but health software is now classified as Class II, which is less regulated. The benefit for Apple in the new regulation regime for health-related apps is that it encourages the development of more apps for the Apple Watch. However, FDA approval is still required for health-related apps.
