All about BlackBerry Ltd (BBRY) Security

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)(TSE:BB)’s head of security services, Alex Manea, recently opened up a bit about how they secure their devices. Although BlackBerry is no longer the high-flying smartphone manufacturer that it once was, the company maintains that it provides the best device security. According to Manea, there is a good reason BlackBerry is different when it comes to device protection.

Hardware embedded security features

At BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY), device security is a priority, not an afterthought as is the case with some other mobile manufacturers. In simple details, Manea laid out their device security features and disclosed that their device protection starts with the hardware, unlike most vendors who only focus on the OS.

The approach that BlackBerry takes in securing its devices can be linked to the construction of a building. It so happens that the tallest building requires the strongest foundation, which at BlackBerry is called the Root of Trust. Manea disclosed that the deeper the Root of Trust is embedded the harder it becomes to compromise.

Component checks

Deeper running Root of Trust is second nature at BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY). The company prides itself of developing devices that run complex security checks every time they boot up to ensure that each component’s security integrity is checked.

In every BlackBerry device, the Boot ROM embedded in the CPU offers digital signature verification of the Boot ROM, which further provides Operating System signing key verification. The OS provides verification of the Base File System hash while the Base File Systems extends support to all the loaded apps by verifying the hashes.

Security never an after thought but a ground up design.

Securing Android apps

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) has been extending its device security features to include third-party apps. For nearly two years now, the company enables users of its BlackBerry 10 platform to run Android apps securely.

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s superior device security features have also seen the company contacted by other device manufacturers to help enhance the security of their devices. The company was recently tapped by Samsung Electronics to provide end-to-end protection for its Android devices.
