The good news for BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)(TSE:BB) is its latest device sold very quickly. Buyers reached out quickly for the limited edition gold BlackBerry Passport device selling out the device in a matter of seconds after the device went on sale. The bad news is there are only 50 gold BlackBerry Passport devices worldwide.

Truly limited edition

Gold and Black BlackBerry Passport retailed at a price of $999 and sold out within minutes on eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY). Today, most limited edition devices are available in quantities that are below a million. However, in the case of gold Passport, BlackBerry has a truly limited device with only 50 gold Passports available for the whole world.

The buyers who managed to acquire the limited edition gold Passport are now auctioning the devices on eBay. A seller on eBay was seen inviting bids for a gold Passport device (#45 of 50) at a starting bid price of $4,000. The limited edition gold Passport on eBay ships with a high-quality black leather case and all the accessories. The devices carry warranties from the manufacturer.

It is not known whether BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) would release more limited edition gold Passport smartphone, but the 50 devices that are already out are causing a buzz.

Shifting gears

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) has shifted its business focus to software and services, but the company continues to push out new devices to accelerate its growth in the new segments. Under its manufacturing agreement with Foxconn, BlackBerry has already launched a number of smartphones that include Passport and Classic.

The company recently disclosed that it was redesigning Passport for AT&T Inc (NYSE:T) customer. The carrier requested for round-edged Passport. The FCC has already cleared BlackBerry to tweak the devices as required by AT&T. The move reveals BlackBerry’s willingness to go the extra mile to please customers.

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) is targeting enterprise and government clients with its secure mobile software and services. It is a segment that CEO, John Chen, believes they have a huge opportunity to grow and return the company to profitability.
