Head of retail innovation at eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY), Healey Cypher was a key brain behind designing and perfecting a smart mirror that blends a computer with a reflective surface. The combination will automatically suggest accessories for the outfit; change the lighting in the fitting room and help shopper call for assistance.

During the pilot trials, two women said that they were fat mirrors. Cypher seriously considered their remarks and worked to design the perfect touchscreen mirror. Following his designing success, the ecommerce giant is now testing the mirrors in select stores, including Nordstrom and Rebecca Minkoff.

Leslie Hand, an IDC analyst, recently noted that growing penetration of smartphones is helping integrate technology into stores, which was not traditionally so popular. While the concept of digital mirrors or magical mirrors isn’t so new, eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY) could take things an additional step by linking its mirrors to its eCommerce platform. The integration could help eBay offer personalized shopping experience to each customer based on their individual tastes and shopping history. Moreover, eBay mirrors are claimed to be more responsive to touch, which could actually work as intended.

eBay is now seriously considering brick-and-mortar stores as an important source of revenue. A recent report by management consulting firm AT Kearney also revealed that about 90% of all retail sales still occur in stores with nearly 95% of all sales captured by stores with a physical location.

A report on shoppers’ preferences noted that shoppers still find physical stores appealing. A consultancy firm explained that the physical presence provide consumers with a sensory experience, enabling them to engage with sales associates, touch and feel products and immerse in brand experiences for their new purchases.

IDC Research expects retailers to spend about $99.6 billion on technologies this year to improve shopping experiences and draw more shoppers to their physical and online stores.
