International Business Machines Corp (IBM) Leads Way In Patents In 2014, Samsung, Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) Top 5
For the 22nd straight year, International Business Machines Corp (NYSE:IBM) occupied the number one slot in patents granted in United States in 2014. While Samsung came in the second spot, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) occupied the fifth slot in in the calendar year of 2014.
Number Of Patents
During the calendar year 2014, International Business Machines Corp (NYSE:IBM) received 7,534 patents in US. On the other hand, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) received 2,829 patents in US last year. QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) received 2,590 and 2,566 patents during 2014. Qualcomm and Google was ranked seventh and eighth in terms of getting most number of patents in a specific year.
In the last 22-years of period as a top patent receiver, IBM’s inventors were able to get over 81,500 patents in the United States. The company’s Chairman, President and CEO, Ginni Rometty, said that the continued patent leadership of over two decades indicated IBM’s commitment towards the fundamental R&D. As a result, the company was able to resolve many daunting challenges faced by its clients, as well as, the globe.
International Business Machines Corp (NYSE:IBM) was able to average 20 patents per day in 2014. This has allowed the company to exceed over 7,000-mark in patents in a single year.
The company’s CEO said that IBM was always exploring the possibilities to grab any emerging opportunities such as social, mobile, security, big data, as well as analytics, and cloud. As a result, the company was able to invest continuously in R&D, which was a key to fueling the transformation.
Of the total number of patents, International Business Machines Corp (NYSE:IBM)’s 3,000 patents or 40% of the total was in relation to cloud computing, security inventions, mobile, social, analytics, and cloud computing. Similarly, the company received over 500 patents for cognitive systems. There was no information about the patents topics covered by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT).
