There was no question that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPhone 6, as well as, iPhone 6 Plus witnessed strong attraction from the consumers during the just concluded holiday season. However, the important factor was that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Android operating software suffered a dent for the first time. In a nutshell, the iPhone maker seems to be gaining in operating system market share.

Winner

Though Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS is available only for its product, the company managed to win over the operating software market share for the mobile segment in the three-month period ended November, according to kantarworldpanel.com. On the other hand, despite being available for all the Smartphone’s, Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Android shed market share in America for the first time after September 2013.

For instance, smartphone penetration in the U.S. reached 58% while it was 65% in Europe’s five big economies. Apple achieved 4.3% higher sales in the three-month period over the year-ago period. AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) and Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) accounted for 57% of Apple’s iOS sales while Verizon Communications and T-Mobile US Inc (NYSE:TMUS) accounted for 33.7% of Android sales. It meant that Apple’s iOS share reached 47.4% while Android’s share dipped two percentage points to 48.4%. The gap is only one percentage point.

Share In Europe

Google’s Android also lost its market share in most of the countries in Europe though Android retained its leadership position in China. The primary factor that contributed to Apple’s iOS market share growth was the tremendous success the new iPhone models achieved in the latest three-month period.

Despite losing 3.2 percentage points share, Android continued to remain the dominant OS enjoying a share of 69.9% in Europe. Britain was the chief wrecker for Google in losing its market share as Android suffered 6.7% loss in share. In China, Android enjoyed a market share of over 80% while iOS share was 18.1% despite growth.

The loss of share for Android could be attributed to Samsung’s loss of market share in the U.S., as well as, Europe.
