Time Warner Inc (NYSE:TWX)‘s HBO Go has joined the growing list of online content providers to join Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) Fire TV. Now, users can use voice activation to choose and watch HBO Go television shows. An HBO subscription is still necessary to access HBO programming.

HBO has been the most requested service for Amazon, so they are more than pleased to now be able to offer the service. Coming this spring, HBO will also be available on Amazon’s Fire TV stick.

As many are arguing that we are in a “Golden Age” of television, HBO is the leader of popular programming including television and movies. With shows like Game of Thrones, True Detective, and the Leftovers, HBO is regularly leading in awards and critical praise for its programming. Recently, HBO announced they would allow an online-only option, allowing people to sign up with HBO Go without subscribing to the channel through their cable network. The recent addition to Amazon Fire TV seems to be a step in that direction.

Meanwhile, Amazon has been making a growing impact in the world of content providers. Since its launch, it has quadrupled its programming selection and now offers more than 700 apps and games. The addition of HBO to its list of content providers lengthens the list of available content significantly.

Whether new technology such as Fire TV and HBO Go will render traditional cable providers obsolete is yet to be seen, although many suspect the trend is going in that direction. If nothing else, consumers have even more choices on how to enjoy their media.
