Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) Xbox outsells Sony Corp (ADR) (SNE) Playstation in November
In November, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)‘s Xbox One outsold Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE)’s Playstation 4 for the first time this year. The surge for Xbox comes after Microsoft cut prices from $399 to $359. Playstation 4 is still selling for $399.
The last time Xbox outsold Playstation was last holiday season in December 2013. Xbox hopes to repeat this trend by continuing to sell well during this holiday season.
Playstation leading 13.5 million to over 10 million for Xbox One
To date, Playstation has consistently outsold Xbox. Even so, the Xbox One has sold over 10 million units as of last month. However, PlayStation has sold over 13.5 million units.
Bundles and Discounted Games Playing Role
One of the reasons consoles sold so well was due to packaging decisions such as offering a free or discounted game with one of the consoles. Each product has its own unique software that it offers. Xbox is offering exclusive games that can only be found on their consoles, such as EA games. PS4 is working towards virtual reality features, but the Xbox One’s voice activation features remain powerful.
Microsoft is hoping the November momentum carries on to December and serves as a good holiday-predictor. We’ll have to wait and see what kids and adults have on their holiday shopping list.
