Altoona, Iowa becomes one of the new cornerstones of Facebook (NASDAQ:FB)’s infrastructure.

Latest in Hyper-Efficient Open Compute Project Gear

The new data center in Altoona, Iowa is cooled by 100% outside area and is the first to take advantage of the company’s innovative new networking fabric which they believe will enable them to scale more efficiently as more people around the globe use Facebook.

The Altoona data center is based on latest Open Compute Project designs. The Open Compute Project is an initiative announced in April 2011 by Facebook to openly share designs of data center projects and came from the effort to redesign Facebook’s data center in Prineville, Oregon.

Powered 100% by Renewable Energy

The company first started the wind project in nearby Wellsburg, Iowa with RPM Access and later transferred rights to Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A) (NYSE:BRK.B)’s MidAmerican Energy to own and operate it.  Over 140 MW of renewable energy is added to the grid, which is more then enough to power the new Facebook Data Center.

One of the most advanced, efficient and sustainable data centers in the world

The company boasts that the new data center will be one of the most advanced, efficient, and sustainable data centers in the world.

More on The Open Compute Project

Facebook participates in the Open Compute Project Foundation which describes itself as a rapidly growing community of engineers whose mission is to design and enable the delivery of the most efficient server, storage and data center hardware designs for scalable computing. It is founded on the premise of sharing ideas and intellectual property to maximize innovation.
